Guide to the Great Highland Bagpipes

How to Read the Item Numbers

Each item number begins with a prefix, which identifies the basic design:

CB = Kintail Chalice
A variation of a pattern popular from the Middle Ages to about the 17th century.
KB = Kintail Regulation
Popular regulation or "military" pattern in use from the 18th century to today.
GB = David Glen 1827
Reproduction of the famous David Glen 1827 pattern, which Sharp & Co. have been authorized to reproduce.
JB = J&R Glen 1796
The 1796 Victorian pattern, which Sharp & Co. have been authorized to reproduce by the Glen family.
DB = Drumran
Mr. Sharp's variation on the standard regulation or "military" pattern.

These patterns are popular with re-enactment groups because of how they fit into specific time periods. The patterns are also timeless and fit into any century, thanks to their grace of form and beauty.

A style number follows each design prefix. This number identifies certain characteristics shared by all the bagpipes in that number group. For instance, a CB-1, KB-1, and DB-1 will all have the same or similar characteristics, as follows:

Style Number

Characteristics

1

Wood projecting mounts (see Note 2), imitation ivory drone ringcaps or ringbands (see Note 1), and plain nickel or brass ferrules.

2

Imitation ivory projecting mounts (see Note 2) and drone ringcaps or ringbands (see Note 1); plain nickel or brass ferrules.

3

Fully-mounted imitation ivory projecting mounts, ringcaps, and ferrules.

4

Imitation ivory projecting mounts (see Note 2) and ringcaps; chased nickel or brass ferrules.

5

Imitation ivory projecting mounts (see Note 2); chased beaded brass or nickel ringcaps, ferrules, slides, mouthtube, and chanter sole.

Characteristics of styles numbered above five will differ for each bagpipe design, and are described in full for each type of pipe in the price list.

Notes

  1. Ringcaps cover the top and sides of the drone. Ringbands cover only the circumference of the drone top.

  2. On the CB design series, the projecting mounts are called "button" or "flush" mounts because they do not project beyond the ferrule.

  3. Beaded ferrules are available in plain or chased nickel, brass, EPNS (electro-plated nickel silver), silver, or copper.

  4. The numbering sequence may be interrupted. The numbers missing contain real ivory, which may not be imported into, or exported out of, the United States. We will not accept orders for or sell any bagpipes or other items which contain materials derived from animals on the Endangered Species List.
