About the Pipes

Scottish Lowland Smallpipes are available as either bellows or mouth-blown bagpipes. Bellows-blown smallpipes are sometimes referred to as “Cauld Wind” pipes because outside air is pumped in through the bellows, as opposed to the piper's warm moist breath blown through the blowpipe.

They're small in size, with a very mellow and quiet sound. They're suitable for indoor playing, or for playing with folk music groups. They come in the key of A or D. The Celtic Piper carries models by Drumran and by John Walsh.

Drumran

Drumran Scottish Lowland Smallpipes are available as mouth-blown or bellows-blown, in the key of A. Bellows blown models feature new, high-efficiency all-synthetic bellows.

Most models feature an African blackwood blowpipe and drones, and true conically bored pipe chanter. (The DSPm1AP, DSPm1AP2 and DSPb1AP models feature a polypenco stock, drones, blowpipe and chanter.) They come with a hide or a canmore bag, velvet bag cover, and plastic reeds (cane drone reeds are available). Depending on the model ordered, the mounts can be customized; contact us for available options.

John Walsh

The John Walsh mouth-blown Smallpipes are available in the key of D or as a handy and economical combination set consisting of two interchangeable chanters for playing in either the key of A or D.

The Celtic Piper also carries recordings of groups playing the smallpipes.
